Camp Spooky (now known as Tricks and Treats) has always been very well done, with so many shows and activities squeezed into the kids’ park to the point there’s never enough time to see and do everything in one day. I’ve been trying to figure out how to improve the structure of Halloween events at Canada’s Wonderland for the past while and I think I’ve come up with an appealing option.

The Trouble with Tricks and Treats

Tricks and Treats has a lot going on with a daily costume parade, four Wonderland productions, and additional shows including the incredible Magic of Aaron Matthews and the unbelievable Doo Doo the Clown. Some Halloween Haunt scare zones and mazes are repurposed as not-so-scary walkthroughs with friendly costumed characters (who also appear throughout the kids’ park). There are trick or treat stations, decorations, and photo ops all over and the PEANUTS gang makes frequent appearances in special Halloween costumes.

All of the above is squeezed into six hours (11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.), with rides, food stalls, and merchandise locations now staying open for another three hours after the end of the event proper. The crowds show up in droves, filling the plazas and often getting Playhouse Theatre to capacity. And therein lies the problem.

Tricks and Treats is incredibly popular, but the kids’ park is cramped enough already before you add these extra shows. Plus there’s an extra stage to set up which would create a bottleneck at the south KidZville gate even before accounting for the fenced in patio bar around Caribou Crossing.

Hamstringing Halloween Haunt

Halloween Haunt originated in 2005 as FearFest, bringing a sinister overlay to the park along with both original frightening experiences and those inspired by Paramount’s intellectual properties. Some of the mazes had stories connected to each other and there was a greater emphasis on themed areas with multiple attractions. These special nights became a separately ticketed event, meaning season pass holders weren’t permitted entry without buying a ticket for an individual night. As a result, park staff had to usher every guest out of the park at 5:00 p.m. before reopening for the Halloween activities at 7:00 p.m.

In the mid 2010s, a Haunt Pass was introduced allowing unlimited visits to Halloween Haunt, but still completely separate from the standard season pass (renamed to the Silver Pass in 2019). Canada’s Wonderland introduced the Gold Pass in 2019, granting unlimited access to the regular spring/summer season, Camp Spooky, Halloween Haunt, and the newly introduced WinterFest. For 2025, Canada’s Wonderland changed the Silver Pass to remain valid only through Labour Day, meaning fall weekends were only accessible through a single-day admission ticket or a Gold Pass. This allowed the park to no longer close for the two hours between the end of Camp Spooky and the start of Halloween Haunt since every ticket/pass valid for the morning is also valid for the evening.

This summary should illustrate to you the gradual erosion of Halloween Haunt as a special event guests would only experience once per year, and only if they were willing to pay for an explicitly intense, scary experience. Now the park charges for access to the mazes, keeping those experiences as a premium activity, but then simultaneously offers an all-season Haunted Attractions Pass to allow for repeat visits.

But what of the scare zones, those areas designed to be full of frightening monsters without waiting in a line? There’s no longer required intention from the guests; anyone who visits Canada’s Wonderland on those select autumn weekends may as well stick around to see what the park looks like at night. They basically already paid for it so may as well get full value out of their ticket/pass. And with the kids’ park hours overlapping with the first two hours of Haunt, families including those with young children are now passing through with no actual desire to engage with scare actors. The “No Boo Necklace,” introduced around the same time as the Gold Pass, adds an extra wrinkle, essentially encouraging guests to try Halloween Haunt even if they frighten easily.

What all this means is the scare zones have become less scary, featuring monsters who have to second guess themselves before scaring anyone for fear of scaring the “wrong” guests.

Back… to the Future!

I would love to say Wonderland should just go back to the way it operated before, but I genuinely don’t think that’s the best option. The Gold Pass is a great option for those who want “four seasons of fun” from the park and ensures WinterFest has a stable attendance level. Closing the park between day and night could be challenging depending on how busy the morning was and it inconvenienced guests who wanted to stick around for the whole day, not to mention limiting the hours available for families to enjoy fear-free entertainment. The new schedule also relieves pressure off Front Gate at the start of Haunt which was always an issue. No, I don’t think there’s any going back. So what should the next evolution of Halloween look like for Canada’s Wonderland?

I propose the elimination of scare zones entirely.

I know, I know, it’s a very bold move and may not be a popular opinion, but I think it could result in a better experience for everyone. And personally, it hurts to say that since I absolutely love interacting with the scarers in these zones every year, but I also hate seeing them struggle every night with audiences who don’t really want the classic Haunt experience.

Instead of scare zones, keep Halloween decorations throughout the park, maybe keeping them focussed in specific zones (so to speak), with interactive elements, music, and sound effects filling the midways. There can be themed areas focussed on specific elements associated with Halloween (candy, monsters, and haunted houses/graveyards for example), similar to WinterFest’s overlays (Tinsel Town, Elf Village, and North Pole). To some degree, this is what California’s Great America and Valleyfair attempted in 2022 when those parks eliminated Halloween Haunt and ValleyScare, replacing those events with the family-oriented Tricks and Treats. Those parks had themed areas such as Everfall (harvest themed), Sweet Tooth Acres (candy themed), Spooky Spires (all things haunted), and Ickyville (all things gross) including some rides getting temporary new names. However I think it was a mistake to get rid of the mazes at those parks.

There’s certainly an appetite for frightening experiences during Halloween and the park already has mazes built in permanent, otherwise unused locations. There’s no reason to remove those from the park, especially now that the park charges an additional fee for access. Yes, despite all my grumblings about the mazes being an up-charge, I think it’s in the best interest of the event and the park’s bottom line to keep the Haunted Attractions Pass. This ensures that everyone who goes through the mazes is fully invested (literally) in getting an intense, scream-inducing experience. Simultaneously, the park will have a measurable return on investment for these specific attractions. I’m not asking for a smaller event; I’d like more mazes to make the price feel more justified. And with no roaming scare actors in scare zones, I think the park can find enough labour (and money) to have temporary mazes built and staffed like the old days.

Entertainment Explosion

With no scare zones, the park can expand Tricks and Treats to have activities run until 8:00 p.m. when the kids’ park closes (or keep it open until 9:00 p.m. like the regular season). Parents have no risk of running into scare actors on their way out of the park and the jam-packed Tricks and Treats live entertainment schedule can be spread across more hours to make it easier for families to experience everything the event has to offer.

At the same time, The Pumpkin Patches and Spectral Sisters can be enjoyed by far more than an audience of kids so they can be moved to a more central location in the park (such as International Showplace or the stage by AlpenFury’s Skyflyer Loop). Nighttime entertainment can continue or even be expanded to start a little earlier each evening, and a new all-ages show (possibly from the outstanding Productions Haut-Vol) can take residence in Canterbury Theatre.

Part of this is selfish since I often find myself wanting to sit and enjoy a show at the park in the fall and there’s always an awkward gap between the daytime and nighttime entertainment. But I genuinely just want more people to see the incredible talent on display, which many guests skip because they assume these shows are “just for kids.” The songs are family friendly but not exclusively kid songs. Meanwhile, Haunt is significantly lighter on shows than it was even three years ago (with the loss of Skeleton Crew, Freak Show, and the Dia de los Muertos performances).

In terms of walk around characters, they should probably be kept almost exclusively to the kids’ park as they are now, with Trick or Treat Street and Wicked Hollow being the exceptions. I think the Halloween Haunt name should probably be retired, but I don’t think Tricks and Treats fully represents the new event either. In my opinion Cedar Point has the perfect name with HalloWeekends. Each day becomes one unified event with different options depending on what type of Halloween activities each guest wants to experience. Why not use that name to better reflect what Canada’s Wonderland has to offer?

For those seeking frights, the Haunted Attractions Pass can be purchased for access to the mazes (which hopefully will be more than the current roster of six). The mazes should be as frightening and over the top as possible, with blood and monsters on full display with probably double the scarers so guests who want a terrifying experience actually get one every time. For those who want an interactive adventure through the park, the lantern (also available for purchase) can trigger effects during the day or night, mostly within Halloween/autumn themed zones around the park which may have various levels of family-friendly, themed spookiness. And for those who want live entertainment, there’s a full lineup of indoor and outdoor shows filling nearly every hour of the day, gradually transitioning from kid-friendly to those dealing with more mature themes/imagery.

It’s so tough to admit, but the old days of Halloween Haunt taking over the entire park, with screams around every corner, are already long gone.
